Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is SSDI?
A: Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is a government program that provides benefits to people whose working ability has been limited by a physical or mental disability. SSDI is not welfare. People who receive SSDI have paid into the system by paying Social Security taxes out of their employment wages.
Q: What types of benefits are provided by SSDI?
A: If you are eligible for SSDI benefits, you may receive a monthly SSDI check. The amount you receive depends on your disability, work history and how much you paid into the Social Security system. In addition to receiving monetary benefits, you will receive medical benefits so you may obtain necessary medical care. Your children may also be eligible to receive benefits if your SSDI application is granted.
Q: Am I eligible for benefits?
A: If you have worked a sufficient amount of time and have a qualifying disability as defined by federal law, you are eligible for SSDI benefits. The Social Security Administration addresses this question by stating:
- You must be unable to do work you did before and cannot adjust to other work because of a medical condition.
- Your disability must last or be expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.
Q: What if my SSDI application has been denied?
A: Do not panic. Most initial applications for SSDI are denied. We can help.
Even if you are not eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits, we may be able to help you obtain Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
