Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a benefit provided by the federal government to people who have limited income. SSI benefits are available to people who are at least 65 years old, blind or disabled and are unable to obtain Social Security Disability benefits.

Benefits for People With Limited Resources

To be eligible for Supplemental Security Income, you must have limited income and assets. As a general rule, you must not have resources of more than $2000 as an individual or $3000 as a married couple if you want to receive SSI benefits.

Certain types of assets do not count toward the $2000 or $3000 limit. Some of the assets that may be excluded from consideration, depending on their value, include your home and your car.

What if I Work?

People who receive SSI may work. They may make a limited salary without losing benefits. As your income increases, your benefits may decrease, however.

Access to Medicaid and Other Benefits

If you application for SSI benefits is granted, you may be entitled to receive additional benefits, including Medicaid, food stamps and other governmental assistance.
